The mental and physical benefits of participating in creative activities are more widely known today than ever before. Research has shown that people with dementia and other progressive neurological diseases retain the ability to create art long after their speech and language skills have diminished. Expressive writing and creating visual art reduces stress, promotes relaxation, manages pain, and helps overcome trauma, depression, and anxiety. While the therapeutic value is clear, we’re just scratching the surface of how the arts can aid medical professionals and help reduce health care costs.
