The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is seeking dynamic theatre artists with classroom or camp experience to join our roster of teaching artists for in-school, after-school, summer, and other programming. STNJ education programs are designed to challenge and inspire young people as they explore theatre, language, teamwork, and Shakespeare. Training in the STNJ methodologies for these programs is provided. Schedules are flexible and based on departmental needs. Teaching artists are scheduled on a program-by-program basis, which could be a workshop or a multi-week residency. STNJ provides all materials and lesson plans for programs.

Compensation:
Teaching Artists are part-time employees. Pay rate begins at $18 per teaching hour and is based on experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey education programs are designed to challenge and inspire young people as they explore theatre, language, teamwork, and Shakespeare. From afternoon workshops to twenty-day residencies, these programs are engaging, fast-paced, and educational. STNJ works with a range of communities within our region, including public and private school groups, students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, and individuals with diverse learning needs. Training in the STNJ methodologies for these programs is provided. Once trained, Teaching Artists will be expected to lead classroom activities and rehearsals.

Responsibilities:
• Establish and maintain a safe, positive, supportive, and inspiring experience for all participants
• Be an enthusiastic ambassador for arts education and a positive representative of STNJ
• Follow STNJ methodologies in workshops, classrooms, and rehearsal spaces; designed to inspire participants with the power of language, theatre, and Shakespeare
• Daily reports to STNJ outlining the progress (successes and challenges) of the workshop or residency

Requirements

Qualifications:
• Experience working with young people is required; STNJ programs typically focus on ages 10-18
• Teaching or Teaching Artist experience (Classroom, camp, etc) preferred
• Creative, enthusiastic, and personable
• Collaborative spirit, especially when co-teaching with other STNJ teaching artists
• Familiarity with New Jersey schools a plus
• Theatre and Shakespeare background (professional or educational) a plus
• All teaching artists will be required to pass state and federal background checks prior to start of work
• Ability to teach in languages other than English helpful, but not required
• Driver’s license required, or other convenient means to travel to and from assignments
