The Count Basie Center for the Arts’ Phoenix Productions in the ever-growing and beautiful downtown Red Bank, New Jersey, is seeking a full-time Technical Specialist to facilitate the construction, transportation and installation of our scenic element and manage our professional-grade scene shop to further enhance the production quality of our organization. The position reports to Phoenix Productions Managing Artistic Director, and works closely with Technical Directors of the Basie Center and show staff, including directors and designers, to reach artistic goals within allotted resources.
Duties and Responsibilities
Key responsibilities:• Establish and implement rules, regulations, and protocols to follow during show builds to ensure everyone’s safety.
• Coordinate with the Artistic Director and the Production Committee to estimate scenic budget information for the season and manage the scene shop’s budget for the year.
• Attend pre-production meetings to discuss progress and challenges in advance and ongoing production meetings during the build phase for progress updates.
• Coordinate and maintain communication with designers including preliminary meetings and progress updates.
• Maintain budget and forecast estimates to keep expenses on track for each production.
• Facilitate ordering of materials and stock/restock of the scene shop during pre-production, build, and post-production.
• Schedule and manage volunteer work calls and coordinate volunteer needs with paint charge and props master to establish the build/work schedule. This schedule will include scenery or properties start, finish, paint, and complete dates. (Only includes properties that will require use of the shop).
• Create and/or facilitate working construction drawings that adhere to safety requirements, budget, and production objectives. Final sign off on all construction methods and materials will be done by the Managing Artistic Director and the Technical Director of the Count Basie Center.
• Coordinate with stage management for the priority of any particular items that might be beneficial to the rehearsal process and integrate those items into the build schedule accordingly. Provide demonstration of functional scenic pieces to stage management wherever applicable.
• Provide scheduling and crew requirements to the venue Technical Director for each production’s load-in and out.
• Coordinate the strategy and crew for packing and unpacking of the truck for load in.
• Coordinate strike and reset of the scene shop post-production. Coordinate return of rental items.
• Maintain the scene shop and the equipment therein, including expendable supplies. This includes forecasting of future equipment purchases/needs.
• Keep accurate records of sets and props that may be rented by local productions.
Requirements
Qualifications• Proven background in scenic construction and stagecraft, especially in a theatrical or performing arts setting.
• Ability to read and interpret scale plans; capable of creating construction drawings and technical plates.
• Experience managing production budgets, purchasing materials, and scheduling within financial constraints.
• Strong skills in supervising crews, coordinating with volunteers, and communicating effectively with artistic and technical staff.
• Knowledge of scene shop operations, maintenance of tools/equipment, and safety protocols.
• Skilled in planning transportation, load-in/load-out, strike, and production timelines.
• Ability to work closely with directors, designers, and venue staff to achieve artistic goals and production efficiency.
• Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time.
• Ability to bend, kneel, stoop, climb ladders and lift 30 lbs.

The position’s primary responsibility required for our 5 main stage shows (February, May, July, September, November), 2 Vogel shows (March and October), and special events including scheduled galas, the Basie Awards Show, and annual organizational gatherings and one-off events. The annual salary range is $50,000-$60,000 commensurate with experience.
